Prof. Tae-Hwan Kim is an Associate Professor at the Department of Physics at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) in Pohang, South Korea. In 2005, he received his Ph.D. in physics from Seoul National University where he studied spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (Advisor: Professor Young Kuk). Prior to joining POSTECH, he worked at the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (2006-2010), where he investigated nanoscale transport properties of various nanostructures at low temperatures by utilizing low-temperature four-probe STM (Advisor: Dr. An-Ping Li). He continued his career as a research professor at POSTECH (2010-2013), where he has studied one-dimensional atomic wires (with Prof. Han Woong Yeom). Since 2013, he has been working as a faculty member of the Department of Physics at POSTECH and his current research interest is topological edge states of low-dimensional electronic systems. Recently, he and his coworkers discovered chiral solitons in indium atomic wires and characterized their structural and electronic properties. Moreover, he proposed topological operation using chiral solitons for next-generation information devices. He is also very interested in 2D materials such as graphene as well as transition metal dichalcogenide. He has co-authored publications in peer-reviewed journals such as Science, Nature Physics, Physical Review Letters, and so on.
